Uttar Pradesh Leads Rooftop Solar Push With 5L Installations

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the national leader in the rooftop solar programme, with 5,00,115 installations across the state, officials said. The state received 8,94,217 applications for rooftop solar systems, most of which have been approved and implemented. These installations have resulted in a total capacity of 1,696.68 MW, reflecting a steady expansion of decentralised solar generation.

The programme has received financial support of Rs 3,038.08 crore from the Centre, along with more than Rs 1,000 crore from the state government, according to officials.

Capacity And Impact
Officials said the expansion has delivered both economic and environmental outcomes. Around Rs 5 crore worth of electricity is being generated daily through rooftop solar installations, while carbon emissions have been reduced significantly.

The sector has also supported employment, with about 65,000 people directly employed through nearly 5,000 companies. Additional indirect employment has also been generated across the value chain. The use of rooftop spaces for solar installations has reduced the need for land acquisition, saving an estimated 6,500 acres for agriculture and other purposes.

Record Installation Pace
In April 2026, the state installed 51,882 rooftop solar plants within 30 days, marking the fastest pace recorded so far. The average daily installation during the month stood at 1,729 systems.

This was marginally higher than the March 2026 average of 1,700 installations per day, indicating sustained execution momentum in the programme. Officials said the pace of deployment reflects strong demand as well as administrative efforts to streamline approvals and implementation, positioning the state at the forefront of rooftop solar adoption in the country.
